Hollow Knight: Silksong features a vibrant economy of Rosaries—the game’s primary currency—and the vendors who accept them often hold the keys to overcoming treacherous terrain or formidable bosses. Some of these NPCs will only appear after certain story milestones, while others must be freed or tracked down through dedicated quest lines. Either way, stocking up on their goods demands patience and a fair amount of enemy grinding.

The very first merchant Hornet encounters needs no introduction—he is simply there, right in the middle of the starting town beside the quest board. At this early stage, a depleted Rosary pouch means Hornet cannot buy anything, forcing a detour into the wilds to gather currency from enemies. Once her purse is heavier, this nameless trader sells a handful of consumables and basic tools that ease the initial learning curve. His stock never expands, but his central location keeps him relevant throughout the entire playthrough.

A far more essential figure is Shakra, the diligent cartographer. Players can spot her in multiple regions, often humming a distinctive tune near benches or unexplored corridors. She sells area-specific maps, each priced differently according to the zone’s complexity. More importantly, she offers the Quill and Compass, two items that transform the act of navigation. The Quill fills in visited rooms automatically, while the Compass pins Hornet’s current location on the map. Near the end of Act 2, Shakra even initiates a personal quest, hinting at deeper connections to Pharloom’s history.
