Project 007 James Bond game may become trilogy

IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game, announced in November 2020 under the working title “Project 007,” is shaping up to be more than a one-off adventure. Studio director Hakan Abrak recently told DR.dk (via VG247) that the team is crafting a completely original story, and he “can easily imagine” the project expanding into a trilogy. The game will also introduce a new, original James Bond character rather than using a digital likeness of any previous actor to portray the role.

A Fresh Take on 007

Before IO could pitch its vision to the gatekeepers of the Bond franchise, the studio spent nearly two years preparing. That preparation culminated in a meeting with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the producers who oversee all James Bond media. Broccoli had previously criticized earlier Bond video games as unworthy of the brand, complaining that they featured “violence for violence’s sake.” IO’s pitch evidently convinced them that a new approach was possible.

Given the studio’s deep experience with the Hitman series, that new approach is widely expected to emphasize stealth over pure shooter mechanics. Hitman’s sandbox levels and emphasis on player choice align well with the kind of sophisticated, spy-appropriate gameplay Broccoli seems to have been looking for. Rather than mowing down waves of enemies, players will likely need to plan, infiltrate, and execute carefully.
