007 First Light: Rough Bond Learns from Q

IO Interactive’s upcoming title, 007 First Light, reimagines James Bond not as the polished, tuxedo-clad icon of film lore, but as a younger, scrappier agent still finding his footing. The game takes an origin-story approach, deliberately stepping away from the suave archetype in favor of a version of Bond who is raw, less refined, and—according to the developer—more relatable to a modern audience.

      A Mentor in Q

A key relationship driving this fresh take is the dynamic between Bond and Q, the Quartermaster who traditionally supplies gadgets and wisdom. In First Light, Q serves as a classy mentor with impeccable taste. Jonathan Lacaille, IO Interactive’s 007 franchise director, described the interplay during a Summer Game Fest 2025 interview:

“The Bond that we have today is not tuxedo Bond, the classy Bond with the martini and so on. He’s young, he’s not the suit guy yet. But Q is more the classy gentleman with a lot of taste, and he will teach Bond what he should wear, manners, you know, why he needs to wear a nice watch and things like that.”

This mentorship echoes the camaraderie seen in other duos—such as Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan in Uncharted—though IO Interactive has previously stated that First Light is not an Uncharted-style action game. The comparison nevertheless highlights how Q shapes Bond’s growth from a rough-around-the-edges operative into the polished agent players recognize.
