Valorant Maps: Why They Get Removed & Reworked

Valorant’s map pool remains intentionally small, with each design carefully scrutinized for competitive viability. Riot Games frequently revisits maps through reworks and, in extreme cases, removes them from rotation when persistent balance issues cannot be patched away. This approach ensures that every map serves a strategic purpose, even if some prove more polarizing than others.

Map Design Philosophy and Notable Reworks

Split is the most prominent example of a map removed from competitive play. Despite multiple reworks, its central rope connections linking one site’s heaven to the other created an overpowering mid control that choked strategic diversity. Riot eventually pulled Split from most rotations in 2022, acknowledging that its layout could not be balanced through incremental changes alone.

Fracture took a different design risk by placing the defending team’s spawn in the middle of an H-shaped map. This allows defenders to rotate quickly through mid, but the central ropes still give attackers a notable advantage. While not removed, Fracture remains a controversial addition due to its unconventional flow.

Icebox has survived through major reworks, most notably a 2022 overhaul of one side to improve balance. It remains a necessary map for close-quarters combat and high-ground play, with shipping containers and vertical angles that reward agents who can secure elevation.
