IO Interactive’s 007: First Light – Origin Story
IO Interactive has chosen to tell an origin story in its upcoming game 007: First Light, setting James Bond’s early career before he attains the iconic ‘00’ status. In an interview with GamesRadar+ at Summer Game Fest, franchise director Jonathan Lacaille explained that exploring a period of Bond’s life “not been covered much” was the “exciting part” of the project. The studio aims to answer questions about the events and people that shaped the character into the legend audiences know today.
A Younger, More Fallible Bond
First Light presents Bond as still young, sometimes reckless, charming but not yet refined in using that charm, and less efficient than the established film version. Lacaille described him as “maybe not as efficient as a later Bond would be.” This deliberate portrayal makes the character more relatable, particularly for a gaming audience that IO expects to be “younger than the Bond franchise is used to.” The origin story allows the narrative to connect well with that demographic while telling something new.
Creative Freedom for Gameplay Integration
Because First Light is not an adaptation of any existing film or novel, the development team has substantial creative freedom to invent characters and events. Lacaille noted that while this freedom means the team must “come up with everything,” it also enables them to shape the story around gameplay mechanics rather than being constrained by established canon. This approach, he said, is what will allow IO to make “a great game.”
