Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Charlie Cox on BAFTA Nod

Charlie Cox, the actor who voiced Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has consistently redirected praise for the performance to the character’s motion-capture actor and the development team. He revealed that his involvement was limited to a few hours in a recording booth, describing himself as a “total fraud” when it comes to gaming. Having not played a video game since his Nintendo 64 days—with a rotation of Mario Kart and GoldenEye 007—Cox admitted in a pre-BAFTA interview with GamesRadar+ that he recently tried parts of Clair Obscur.

Cox played only the opening sections, not completing the full experience, which he estimated takes 50 to 100-plus hours. He described walking around, meeting characters, and gathering information, adding, “I’m not very good, because obviously it’s a skill set.” His earlier gaming rotation included Mario Kart and GoldenEye 007, which he said were “incredibly addictive and huge amounts of fun, but they weren’t stories.” Hearing his own voice in a motion-captured performance felt disconnected from himself; he thought of it as Gustave rather than Charlie Cox. “It didn’t really feel like me… I thought of it as Gustave,” he said.
