The Ford Voodoo V8: Highest-Revving Production Ford V8 Ever
Most V8 engines rely on displacement rather than extreme revs to generate power. Their abundant low-end torque usually makes high redlines unnecessary. Ford, though, has produced several exceptions over more than a century of engine development. Among them, one production V8 stands above the rest: the 5.2-liter Voodoo engine, which carries the highest factory redline ever fitted to a Ford V8.
With a factory-set redline of 8,250 rpm, the 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 claims the title of highest-revving Ford V8 engine built for production. It arrived in 2015 and spent its life under the hood of the Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT350R. Naturally aspirated, the Voodoo produced 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, impressive numbers for an engine without forced induction.
Why the flat-plane crank matters
The Voodoo’s high-revving character comes from its flat-plane crankshaft. In this layout, the four connecting rod journals are spaced 180 degrees apart, rather than the 90-degree spacing found on a conventional cross-plane V8. Cross-plane engines typically require large counterweights for balance, and those counterweights add rotating mass. Flat-plane engines avoid much of that mass, which reduces inertia and allows the engine to rev more freely.
That design choice brings trade-offs. A flat-plane V8 generally gives up some low-end torque, and it creates more vibration than a cross-plane mill. Ford managed the vibration in the GT350 with a dual-mass flywheel and exhaust dampers so the car would not rattle its occupants. The payoff is a sharper throttle response, a higher peak rpm, and a distinctive high-pitched scream rather than a traditional American V8 rumble.
