    Tap water is not drinkable. This is not a scare story — locals do not drink it either, and every hotel room has a kettle for a reason. Buy bottled water (cheap and everywhere) or bring a filtered bottle.

    Ice in drinks is generally fine in cities and in any place that looks busy.

    Street food is fine, with the same rule as anywhere: queues of locals are a good sign, empty stalls are not. If it is cooked in front of you and turning over fast, you will be fine. Avoid pre-cut fruit sitting out and anything lukewarm and uncovered.

    Your stomach will adapt in a few days if you do not go straight for maximum spice on day one.
