Ordering food when you do not read Chinese
Three approaches, in order of how well they work:
- Point at what someone at the next table is eating. This has never once let me down.
- Photograph the menu, translate it, then point. Works everywhere, nobody minds.
- Find the longest queue of locals and join it. Whatever they are having is good.
Worth carrying: a translation card in Chinese stating any dietary restriction. “No meat, no fish, no seafood, no chicken broth” written out covers most of it — oyster sauce, chicken stock and lard are the usual hidden culprits.
What is your method? And what is the best thing you have eaten by accident?
