Is China safe? The honest answer
Yes — and it is the wrong question.
Violent crime against tourists is rare, considerably rarer than in most Western cities. What actually catches visitors out:
- Traffic. E-bikes obey approximately no rules. Walk like the cars will not stop for you, because they will not.
- Tourist scams around major sights. The “tea ceremony” and “art student” ones are classics — the pattern is always a friendly English speaker who wants to take you somewhere.
- Altitude, if you are heading to Tibet or high Yunnan. This puts more travellers in hospital than crime does.
Beyond that, China is one of the easier countries to travel in. Walking alone at night in major cities is generally fine.
