Flying into which city first?
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an. Each gives you a completely different first impression of the country.
My take:
- Shanghai — the easiest landing. Most English, most familiar, most walkable, straightforward airport transfer.
- Beijing — the most rewarding. The history is genuinely overwhelming.
- Chengdu — the most fun. Pandas, food, and a much slower pace.
If you have ten days: land in Shanghai, train to Beijing, fly home. It is a cliché for a reason.
Where did you land first, and would you do it again?
