DiDi vs taxi vs metro – what actually works day to day
DiDi wins on almost every axis for a visitor: English interface, price shown before you accept, route fixed on the app so the driver cannot take you the long way, and no cash involved.
The exceptions:
- Metro is faster in rush hour in Beijing and Shanghai, and dramatically cheaper
- Taxis are occasionally easier if you have a lot of luggage and can show the driver the address in Chinese
One tip: have your destination saved in Chinese characters. Drivers sometimes call to confirm, and you will not be able to answer — they will usually just follow the pin.
What do you default to?
