  • Airport to hotel in China when you do not speak Chinese – every option, ranked

The first hour after landing is where most China trips go wrong. Here is how to get from the airport to your hotel without needing a word of Chinese.

    1. DiDi — the best default

DiDi is the Chinese ride-hailing app and it works in English. The route is fixed on the app, the price is shown before you accept, and no cash changes hands.

Set it up before you fly, and have your hotel saved as a Chinese address.

The thing nobody tells you: at large airports the DiDi pickup point is often nowhere near the taxi rank. At Shanghai Pudong it is on a completely different level. Follow the signs reading 网约车 — literally “app-hailed car”.

Screenshot your driver’s plate number before you go looking. Drivers sometimes call to confirm, and you will not be able to answer. They will usually just follow the pin.

    2. Metro — cheapest, and fastest in daylight

Every major Chinese airport connects to the metro. Ticket machines have English. Signage is bilingual throughout.

Take the metro if you land during the day, your hotel is near a stop, and you are not hauling a lot of luggage.

Skip it if you land after midnight, or you have heavy bags and a line change.

    3. Taxi — works fine, with one preparation

Taxis are fine. The only real problem is communication.

The fix is a screenshot: save your hotel’s address in Chinese before you fly, and show the driver the picture. That is the entire conversation.

Keep some cash as backup. Most taxis take Alipay now, but not all.

    4. Hotel transfer — book it if you land late

More expensive, zero stress. If you land after 10pm, or you are arriving somewhere unfamiliar, it is worth the money.

Email the hotel before you fly. Most will arrange it.

    5. Airport express train

Beijing, Shanghai and a few others run a dedicated airport express. Fast, cheap, English signage. But it only helps if your hotel is near the terminus — check the map before you commit.

The ten minutes that make all of this work

Do these before you board, on your home Wi-Fi:

    1. Install DiDi and set up payment
    2. Screenshot your hotel’s Chinese name and address
    3. Screenshot your booking confirmation
    4. Download an offline Chinese translation pack

That is ten minutes of preparation that removes almost every problem people have on arrival.

Which option do you use? And has anyone been properly lost at a Chinese airport?
