7 Days To Die Ammo Crafting: Components & Unlocks

In 7 Days To Die, every ranged weapon you rely on—whether a pistol, shotgun, bow, or rocket launcher—requires its own specific ammunition. Because many ammo types share common components like Bullet Tips, Casings, and Gunpowder, you’ll need to build a substantial stockpile if you plan to switch between weapon classes. The base of all bullet crafting happens at the Forge under the Ammo/Weapons tab, where you combine these three ingredients.

Bullet Tips and Casings are smelted from Brass, Lead, and Clay. You dig Clay from the ground with a shovel, while Brass and Lead come from looting containers and scrapping items like radiators, sinks, and electronics. Gunpowder is a rarer resource. You can loot it from destroyed chemistry stations, chemistry sets, trash piles, vehicles, and Shotgun Messiah crates, but your most reliable source is crafting. To craft Gunpowder, you first need to unlock the Chemistry Station by reading 50 Forge Ahead books. At the Chemistry Station, combine one Nitrate Powder with one Coal per Gunpowder. Nitrate Powder is found by mining Nitrate Rocks, smashing purple or blue stacked bags in buildings, and searching trash piles and corpses. Coal is easiest to gather in the Burnt Forest biome, where surface deposits are abundant.

Each weapon archetype—Shotgun, Rifle, Automatic, Pistol, Magnum, Sniper, and Bow/Crossbow—has its own seven-volume skill-book series. Reading specific volumes within a series unlocks advanced ammo recipes and perks for that weapon class. The pattern is consistent across all archetypes, so learning one set of unlocks teaches you how the system works for the rest.
