Black Myth Wukong: Yin Tiger Armor Upgrade Guide

Armor upgrades in Black Myth Wukong can dramatically improve your survivability, but the system isn’t available from the start. To upgrade your defensive gear, you need to find Yin Tiger, a burly cat blacksmith who resides in the Painted Realm—a hidden hub zone that becomes accessible during Chapter 3. This guide, updated for the Xbox Series X release on August 20, 2025, walks you through exactly how to unlock Yin Tiger and start upgrading your armor sets.

Before unlocking the Painted Realm, you can only craft new armor sets as you discover them. This often forces you to swap equipment frequently just to keep your stats in line with rising enemy difficulty. Yin Tiger changes that by letting you improve the base defensive stats of any armor you own, using Will and specific crafting materials. This means older sets—and their unique effects—can remain viable throughout the game.

How to unlock the Painted Realm and Yin Tiger

The quest chain to reach Yin Tiger starts in Chapter 2 and carries into Chapter 3. Here’s the streamlined path:

      • In Chapter 2, after the Village Entrance checkpoint in Sandgate Village, jump into the Ravine on your left and enter the cave at the end. Inside, you’ll meet Xu Dog, a medicine merchant who says a frog stole his formula. Defeat the optional frog boss Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw (a giant yellow frog with lightning attacks) in the nearby pond. Speak to Xu Dog afterward, and he will move on.
      • Progress through the story until you reach the Cellar checkpoint in Crouching Tiger Temple. Inside, you’ll find Xu Dog again, now a permanent merchant who sells medicines and upgrades.
      • Continue into Chapter 3 and defeat the story boss Kang-Jin Star
