Fright Cliff Man-in-Stone Quest: Azure Dust Spell

In Chapter 2’s Fright Cliff, you can start a peculiar side quest by speaking to the Man-in-Stone. This quest leads to two optional boss fights but rewards you with the Azure Dust spell, a temporary transformation into a high-defense Rock Guai, plus access to a merchant selling unique items like the Sobering Stone.

Starting the Quest

Begin at the Squall Hideout checkpoint in Fright Cliff. Head straight ahead – between the cave networks on your left and an enemy fort on the right, there’s a crevasse in the ground. At the end of it, you’ll find the Man-in-Stone. Talk to him; he explains that a Guai has trapped him in the nearby caves and asks for your help to free him.

Defeating the Mother of Stones

Now you need to find the Guai. Enter the cave network as if heading toward the Rockrest Flat checkpoint. On the left-hand wall, you’ll see a staircase lit by blue-fire braziers. Go up those stairs. At the top, you’ll encounter a huge creature covered in glowing blue rocks – the Mother of Stones. This optional boss is stationary and doesn’t attack directly; instead, it summons minions. Hold off the adds while damaging the Mother until she’s defeated. After the fight, you’ll receive the Stone Essence key item. (Note: while here, you can also find one of the Buddha’s Eyeballs on the outside ledge next to her if you’re pursuing that separate sidequest.)
