Leon Kennedy Name Origin: Léon the Professional
After nearly 30 years of speculation, the director of the original Resident Evil 2, Hideki Kamiya, has officially confirmed that Leon S. Kennedy’s name was directly inspired by the 1994 film Léon: The Professional. The revelation came via a post on X/Twitter, finally putting to rest a long-standing theory within the Resident Evil community.
A Name Borrowed from Cinema
Kamiya recalled the moment he pitched the name to Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami during early development. After having several name ideas rejected, Kamiya suggested taking the protagonist’s name from a film he had recently watched. According to Kamiya, who recounted the story using Google Translate, his proposal was met with a simple, “Yeah, that works,” and Mikami approved it without further objection. Fans had drawn parallels between Leon and the film for decades, aided by Resident Evil‘s long-running “Professional” difficulty setting, which echoed the film’s title.
The Matilda Question and Closing the Loop
One persistent fan theory connected Leon’s signature handgun, the Matilda, to the film’s young character Mathilda. Kamiya clarified that this reference was not his doing. He stated that the weapon name was added by someone else at Capcom after his departure from the company. The director expressed surprise at the reaction to his confirmation, noting that he had never tried to hide the connection but simply had not mentioned it before. The post was widely shared, effectively ending almost three decades of conjecture among fans.
