Expedition 33: Sophie’s Actor Billie Fulford-Brown
In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Sophie appears only briefly, but her presence lingers. She is young, dignified, melancholic, and close to death—a character meant to personify the game’s world itself. Actor Billie Fulford-Brown had just a handful of scenes to convey all of that, yet she made every line count.
Drawing From Real Life
Fulford-Brown brought personal experience into the booth. She channeled her grief over her grandmother’s passing to fuel Sophie’s quiet desperation. Then, to capture the love between Sophie and Gustave (voiced by Charlie Cox), she drew on her own lifelong relationship—she and her husband have been together since they were eight years old. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, it’s as if Gustave is Mark,’” she recalls. “You’ve grown up together, you’ve gone through all of this, you know something’s going to happen.”
Such emotional mining is a staple of her craft. Fulford-Brown credits years of theatre training and Stanislavski’s “emotion memory” technique for letting her access deep feelings quickly and safely. In video games, actors rarely have time to prepare; they often step into the booth without a script. But Clair was different. She received the full script beforehand and had the game’s lead writer in the room during recording—an unusual privilege that helped her navigate the dense lore.
