What is the one thing you would tell a first-timer?
Open thread. Drop one tip in the replies. I am compiling these into a guide and will credit everyone whose tip makes it in.
Mine: do not try to see everything. China rewards depth over coverage, and the trips people remember are the ones with three cities, not seven.
