Booking high-speed rail with a foreign passport
Your passport is your ticket. You tap it at the gate like a travel card — no printing, no collection, no counter queue. This is the single best thing about Chinese rail.
How to book
- Trip.com — English interface, easiest for a first trip
- 12306 — the official app, now with an English mode
Timing
- Book 5 to 7 days ahead for popular routes
- Around Chinese New Year and the first week of October, book the moment tickets open — they genuinely sell out
Second class is fine for anything under four hours. Beyond that, first class buys a wider seat and a quieter carriage, which on a seven-hour run is real money’s worth.
