Do you need a VPN in China, and how do you set one up before you fly?
Short answer: if you use Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Slack, yes.
The part nobody mentions: you have to install and test it before you arrive, because the download sites are blocked once you are inside the country. People land, discover their VPN will not download, and spend their first day in a hotel lobby trying to fix it.
Two alternatives worth knowing:
- Your normal home SIM on international roaming often bypasses the blocks, because traffic routes through your home carrier
- Some travel eSIMs do the same. Check the fine print before buying.
What are you using? And did it actually work when you landed?
