Best time to go, honestly
Everyone says spring and autumn. That is true and also useless, because so does everyone else — which means those are exactly the weeks when the popular places are unbearable.
What actually matters:
- Avoid Chinese New Year (late January / February). Everything is booked, prices spike, and a lot of small businesses close.
- Avoid the first week of October. National Day holiday — the entire country travels.
- Late November is the sweet spot for most of the country, and almost nobody takes it.
My argument: the trade-off is not weather versus crowds. It is which crowds you are willing to accept. A cold, empty Xi’an beats a warm, packed one.
When did you go, and would you go again at that time?
